What is a JXL file?
JPEG XL is a modern successor to JPEG, aiming for both better compression and lossless re-encoding of existing JPEGs.
JPEG XL was designed by the same standards body behind the original JPEG, with a specific, unusual goal: not just better compression for new images, but the ability to losslessly repackage an existing JPEG into a smaller JPEG XL file and convert it back byte-for-byte later if needed. On top of that transitional trick, it also supports much better compression for new content, wide color and HDR, and both lossy and lossless modes in one format — though as a newer standard, browser and software support is still catching up.
How to open a JXL file
JXL files open readily in Support is limited and growing — check your browser's current compatibility. For real editing rather than just viewing, reach for GIMP (with recent builds), libjxl-based tools.
Support is still rolling out; converting to JPG or PNG remains the safest bet for now if you need broad compatibility.
