Video format
What is a M4V file?
M4V is Apple's video variant of the MP4 container, used by iTunes for movies and TV show downloads.
M4V is, structurally, almost identical to MP4 — Apple created the distinct extension mainly to mark content sold or rented through iTunes, occasionally with added copy protection (FairPlay DRM) for purchased movies and TV shows. Because it shares MP4's underlying structure, unprotected M4V files play in nearly anything that reads MP4; the friction only shows up with DRM-protected downloads, which are tied to an Apple account.
How to open a M4V file
M4V files open readily in QuickTime Player, iTunes/Apple TV app, Most modern media players. For real editing rather than just viewing, reach for Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro.
