What is a MP3 file?

MP3 is the format that made digital music mainstream — lossy compression that plays back on essentially every device made in the last 25 years.

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute and standardized as part of MPEG in the early 1990s, and it became the format that made portable digital music practical in the first place — shrinking a CD-quality track down to roughly a tenth of its uncompressed size by discarding audio detail the human ear is least sensitive to. Decades later, despite the rise of more efficient codecs like AAC and Opus, MP3 remains the safest choice whenever compatibility is the priority, since there's essentially no device or piece of software made in the last two decades that can't play it.
