Document format
What is a PDF file?
PDF is a fixed-layout document format designed to look identical on any device, printer, or operating system.
Adobe created PDF (Portable Document Format) in the early 1990s to solve a problem that seems obvious in hindsight but wasn't at the time: a document created on one computer often looked completely different — or didn't open at all — on another, depending on fonts, software, and printer drivers. PDF fixed that by embedding everything a page needs (fonts, layout, images) directly in the file, guaranteeing it renders identically everywhere. Adobe later handed the specification to ISO, making it a fully open standard, which is a big part of why it remains the default choice for contracts, forms, and anything that needs to look exactly the same when it's opened six months from now on a completely different machine.
