What is a PSD file?

PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native project format, preserving layers, masks, and editable text rather than a single flattened image.

Unlike JPG or PNG, a PSD file isn't meant to be a finished, shareable image — it's a working file that preserves every layer, adjustment, mask, and editable text box exactly as you left them, so a design can be picked back up and revised later. That editability comes at the cost of portability: a PSD only opens fully in Photoshop or a small number of compatible editors, and it needs to be flattened and exported to something like PNG or JPG before it can be viewed on the web or by someone without the right software.

How to open a PSD file

PSD files open readily in macOS Preview and Windows Photos can show a flattened preview, but not the layers. For real editing rather than just viewing, reach for Adobe Photoshop, GIMP (partial support), Affinity Photo (partial support).

Strengths & limitations

Good for

  • full editability — layers, effects, and text stay separate

Watch out for
