Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my AVIF get?+
It depends on the source image and the quality you pick — photographic images with lots of detail compress less than simple graphics. Try 70–80% quality as a starting point.
Does compressing change the image dimensions?+
No — this tool only affects file size and visual quality, never the pixel dimensions. Use the Resize tool if you also want smaller dimensions.
Is this a lossy or lossless process?+
Lossy — you're trading a small amount of visual quality for a smaller file, controlled entirely by the quality slider.
Is there a maximum file size?+
There's no fixed upload limit — Orbfile isn't uploading anything. The practical ceiling is your device's own memory, which comfortably handles even large, high-resolution photos.
How do I compress a AVIF?+
Drop your AVIF into the box above and drag the quality slider — the estimated output size updates live, and your download is ready the moment you're happy with the tradeoff.
About AVIF
What is AVIF?
AVIF is a newer, next-generation image format built on the AV1 video codec, delivering some of the smallest file sizes available today.
Full AVIF format guide →A smaller AVIF file means faster uploads, faster page loads, and fewer headaches with size limits on email or messaging apps. The tradeoff is a small, controllable amount of visual quality, which you can dial in yourself.
How it works
- 1
Drop your file in
Drag your image onto the box above, or click it to browse — there's no account to create and no upload to wait on.
- 2
Adjust the slider
Drag the quality slider and watch the estimated file size update in real time.
- 3
Download the result
Your browser processes everything locally and hands you a download link the moment it's done — nothing was ever sent to a server.
Is it private?
Everything happens locally, inside this browser tab. Your image is read from disk, processed with WebAssembly running on your own device, and handed back to you as a download — it's never transmitted anywhere, so there's nothing to intercept and nothing stored on a server.
Common use cases

About AVIF files+
AVIF is a newer, next-generation image format built on the AV1 video codec, delivering some of the smallest file sizes available today.
AVIF takes the intra-frame compression from the royalty-free AV1 video codec and repurposes it for still images, and the result is often noticeably smaller than an equivalent WebP or JPEG at the same visual quality. It also supports wide color gamuts, HDR, and transparency, making it one of the more technically complete image formats available. The tradeoff is encoding speed and, until recently, patchier software support — both are improving quickly as browsers and operating systems catch up.
How to open a AVIF file
Opens readily in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari (recent versions). For real editing, use GIMP (recent versions), Affinity Photo.
Some older photo viewers and editors need an add-on or a recent update to open AVIF directly.
Good for
- often 50% smaller than PNG or JPG at visually similar quality
- supports transparency and HDR
Watch out for
- slower to encode
- not yet supported everywhere older software runs
